Students from Cardinal Stritch University's Audio Storytelling class teamed up with 88Nine this month to create six stories about volunteerism in our community. The projects are complete, and every day this week, 88Nine will post some of the students' work.
Stritch Senior Raises Toys for Sick Kids.
By: Lena Edstrom
In the spirit of the holidays, Cardinal Stritch University senior Zach Fry is collecting donations this winter. He and other Stritch students are gathering toys for sick kids at Children’s Hospital.
It’s a cause especially close to Zach.
Zach’s brother, Colin, was in and out of the hospital a lot as a child. Colin spent many holidays in a hospital gown.
But one thing that helped Colin recover was less tangible – human kindness. Volunteers visited him in the hospital, providing some much needed cheer in the form of gifts, events and even local celebrities.
“That was a major part of his recovery,” Zach said.
After this holiday, Zach plans to keep volunteering. Throughout the year, Zach spends a lot of time helping “at-risk” youth -- one of his passions -- at Running Rebels and St. Benedict’s soup kitchen.
Zach Fry’s dedication to helping those in need is inspiring., and the number of people he has helped throughout the years is countless. From his efforts, and fellow Stritch students, kids at Children’s Hospital will be able to put aside their pain to unwrap great toys, making their stay special this holiday season. And hopefully, like Zach’s brother, it will help them in a speedy recovery.
