ROCKET JUICE & THE MOON

Support 88Nine And This Artist:

Rocketjuice and The Moon is a funk supergroup formed in 2008. The group consists of Damon Albarn (guitar, vocals, keys) of Blur and Gorillaz, Flea (bass) of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tony Allen (drums, percussion), longtime drummer and musical producer for Fela Kuti.

The project was announced in mid 2009, however due to various other project by the band members recording was often delayed. Allen had previously worked with Albarn as a drummer in his band, The Good, the Bad and the Queen. On October 27, 2011, Albarn released a statement announcing band's name. He said that he had nothing to do with naming the band and that someone in Lagos did the sleeve design for the album and that’s the name he gave it. Albarn he said he is fine with the name because trying to find a name for another band is always tricky.

The band performed together for the first time on the 28th of October 2011 in Cork, Ireland, as part of the annual Cork Jazz Festival, under the moniker Another Honest Jon's Chop Up!. A full tour is not expected anytime soon due to the Red Hot Chili Peppers tour lasting until 2013.

The band's self-titled debut album containing 18 tracks was released on March 26th, 2012. The album contains guest appearances by Erykah Badu, Fatoumata Diawara, M.anifest, M3nsa, and Cheick Tidiane Seck. Songfacts.com reports Poison is the only track on the album that Damon Albarn sings lead.
