For the first new Seven O'Clock Sample of 2014, we dedicate the program to Uncle Phil. Actor James Avery, who played the beloved Uncle Phil on the hit 1990s sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," has passed away due to complications from open-heart surger. He was 68.

If you grew up on this show, like me, it's sad new for the new year.  So today we dedicate our sample to Mr James Avery.

Two Milwaukee area homeless shelters are able to open up extra beds this week thanks to a donation from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The Guest House for men and Cathedral Center, which serves families and women, will be able to accommodate the increasing need for shelter as temperatures drop close to zero. The youngest of seven children, Patty Griffin grew up hearing her mother sing while doing housework and her grandmother's family sing on the front porch at night. In addition to listening intently to the Beatles, Griffin was fascinated by the music of Bruce Springsteen and Rickie Lee Jones. Although she acquired a $50 guitar and began writing songs at the age of 16, Griffin gave little thought to a career as a musician.
