Here is an early Spring treat. Polica just announced a small tour to kick off in April.  One of those stops will be at the Cactus Club on April 7.  I wonder if this means that we can expect new music from the band.  Apparently frontwoman Channy is working on a side project called WAREY, which is a quartet that has a current residency at the Icehouse in Minneapolis. Minneapolis artist Ponybwoy will be opening for the show.

5 O'Clock Shadow 1-20-15: "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life"

Evidently January 20th is national DJ day, something DJ's made up to feel good about themseleves. At least, I don't think it was a formal declaration by anyone of note. It's a good excuse to play this track from Indeep, covered by King Britt's Sylk 130 project.

Yay DJ's. We're here. Still.

Vintage Afro-Rock Nuggets Mixtape | Sound Travels Jan. 18th 2015

African music is often admired for its poly-rhythms, its ancient musical traditions and at times, the novelty of Western instrumentation within a traditional mode. More than most continents, Africa tends to suffer from the perception we'd rather have than its actuality. Fact is, African music is as diverse as the continent is big; and that's bigger than we tend to know or believe. That Africa has a rock scene is a fact most people aren't even aware of; that it's had a scene as old as the genre itself is criminally unknown-- until now.

Rhythm Lab Radio Song of The Week: Lido x Halsey, "Slow"

We head to Norway for this week’s song. The song, “Slow" is a collaboration between Norwegian producer Lido and New York based singer Halsey. The track features a slowed-down sample of a tune called “Fast” by Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith. Lido’s Trap inspired production pairs well with Halsey’s sultry rap-like singing.  It is a perfect song for late-night driving through the city after the clubs and bars are closed. Take a listen to “Slow” from Lido and Halsey.
