Scent of Yasmine

Yasmine became known with Soapkills, the duo she founded in Beirut, which may have been the first indie/electronic band to appear in the Middle East. In Soapkills, she found fame, some claim iconic, status among the vibrant, young arts scene which was popping in postwar Lebanon and kind of an emblem of that dynamically independent woman (a la Erykah Badu) throughout the Arab world.

Hendrix of The Sahara; Vieux Farka Toure's Struggle

Vieux Farka Touré's beautiful latest album is titled Mon Pays for a reason. Mon Pays, translates to “my country” in English and when you understand that this homage to his homeland, Mali is also an affirmation of self. Son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure, Vieux is his own man. Known as “The Hendrix of The Sahara,” he comes from a family steeped in military tradition, a tradition his father defied by becoming a musician (which in Mali really is like giving up a good job to become a vagrant).

The bill that approved by the Senate on a 19-14 vote would cut the board's budget by two-thirds and limit supervisors' role in contracts, labor negotiations and land sales.
