During 414 Music Live a few weeks ago, we featured a session with the new Milwaukee band Light Music. Light Music is an electronic rock band consisting of members Brendan Benham, Shae Lappen, Dan Mena, and Ed Zuehlke. The members were formerly in a band called The Four Hundred that broke up a few years ago. Benham is also in the band Altos and Collections of Colonies of Bees.

Well the Sound Travels Mixtape sohould definitely be the Kool Aid you should sip and this past weekend's mixtape featuring the music of Suriname, is your ticket to a country that likely sits on the very fringe of your awareness. I made this mixtape for you because of that very mystery. I thought to myself "what's the most unloved, un-talked-about country on the map?" (though there are many answers to that question, which is a lil bit subjective anyway) and thought the former Dutch colony of Suriname certainly fit the bill.

The Milwaukee Film Festival has done an amazing job of being inclusive of all cultures and backgrounds with the films it screens. This year is no different with series on Mexican cinema, food and drink culture, and a kid only series.  Today, Milwaukee Film Festival announces a new series with a focus on emerging and established African-American filmmakers called Black Lens.

Milwaukee Public Schools to serve free meals to all students

On August 18, 2014 Milwaukee Public Schools released the following press release:

Milwaukee Public Schools announced Monday an amendment to its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the 2014-2015 school year.

The district is now among the first school systems in Wisconsin participating in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP), which means that all students at 156 MPS elementary, middle and high schools will be able to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at no charge, regardless of family income.

414 Music Live: Ian & The Dream

Here at 88Nine, we are excited to announce that Milwaukee band, Ian and the Dream, will be preforming at the Radio Milwaukee studio on Thursday for this weeks edition of 414 Music Live.

Starting as High school friends, Ian Ash and Chivo, came together to form Ian and the Dream in 2008. The band’s name was an early acknowledgment of the uphill battle they understood they would be fighting in order to make a name for themselves in the Music Industry.

'Operation DREAM' helping youth reach their potential

Operation Dream is a nonprofit organization and mentoring program that works with young boys to help them become leaders in their communities.

Founded in 2006, Operation Dream builds leadership, academic, and social skills among at-risk youth through an peer-mentoring program.  

It serves primarily boys whose environment puts them at particular risk and for whom existing organizations are out of reach, according to its website.
