A few days ago, the music portion of SXSW kicked off in Austin, Texas. It was very hard to choose what to see that day. I found that one of my friends in Brooklyn, who founded the site The Couch Sessions, was throwing a showcase called Circus along with Brooklyn Bodega, who is responible for the very popular Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. The showcase features performances from The Stepkids, Alice Russell, Pharoah Monch, and countless others.
It was a trek to get to the showcase, but well worth the long walk. When I got to the venue, I met up with my friend Stone, runs the great blog The Couch Sessions (check out our interview with him 2 years ago). I just got the tail-end of the band The Stepkids. Simply amazing. The band is signed to the amazing independent label Stones Throw, which was founded by Peanut Butter Wolf. I got to have a little conversation with Peanut Butter Wolf before Alice Russell hit the stage. We talked about Stones Throws' forthcoming super hip hop project the Quakers.

Then one of my favorite singers perform. Tru Thoughts records' Alice Russell was doing her thing way before Amy Winehouse. Her voice was just magical. Just check out this little video of Alice performing at SXSW.
I will be catching Alice Russell and Quantic perform together on Saturday here at SXSW, and hopefully I wil get some footage for you to check out.
