When you do think of a city with a start-up culture, New York, Silicon Valley comes to mind to the most people. You could say Milwaukee would not be on most people's lists.  However, that is changing. Companies such as Shindig, Spreenkler, Translator are developing a unique culutre for start-ups and innovation.

From June 6 - 11,  the organization MiKE (Innovation In Milwaukee) will present Milwaukee Innovation Week, which will exhibit the region’s talent and robust contributions to the local economy in the areas of design, innovation and technology.

On the first day of Milwaukee Innovation week will be a entrepenuer competition for high school and college students called Battle of the Brands. Students will present their business idea that includes social good and technology. This event is on June 6 at 5:30pm at OPEN MiKE in the Grand Avenue Mall.

On June 7, there will be several events starting with Leave Your Mark from 5pm to 6pm.

Using mobile devices, GPS technology and local social networks, a group of Milwaukeeans will use their phones to check-in to locations across the city of Milwaukee. On a web map, built specifically to track social media check-ins of Milwaukee, a word will appear creating a work of digital art coordinated in an effort to show young Milwaukeean’s love for the city. After the word has been scribed on the map of the city, the participants will convene together at the COMMON Pitch, where it will be publically displayed.

You can sign-up to participate here.

At 6pm, the international competition Common Pitch will be hosted at Turner Hall Ballroom begining at 6pm. Common Pitch is a non-traditional pitch event featuring live music, collaboration, creativity and - most importantly - a stage for some of the brightest new innovators in the nation.

The 8 finalists for  Common Pitch Milwaukee have been announced, and you can check them out here. Following the competition, there will be an after-party at Turner Hall featuring the band Gold Motel. The local start-up Shindig is hosting a contest to see who will be the opener for Gold Motel.

Friday, June 8 from 6 to 9pm, Milwaukee Innovation week will host a Collaborative Workshop Tour Night.

A select number of Milwaukee’s regional 30+ co-working and maker space laboratories will host tours throughout the same evening encouraging cross promotion of each unique environment’s offerings and hands-on experiences for event participants. In addition, Bucketworks, one of the original co-working spaces in the state and country, will be hosting its 10th Anniversary Party. All guests of the tour are welcome to attend the free event that will include live music, art and showcase the last 10 years of Bucketworks’ innovation factory.

There will be two events on Saturday. Kohl's Idea Challenge and Libation Innovation hosted by MillerCoors.  Kohl's Idea Challenge is an opportunity for creatives, designers, developers, business savvy students and professionals to mix it up at the Kohl’s Idea Challenge. The daylong event will challenge teams of 4-5 to come up with an innovative idea for an integrated retail experience. Kohl’s is looking for smart design, technology and BIG ideas! If you are interested, you can register here.

Then later that night at the MillerCoors historic Stables Building from 7-10pm, there will be an interactive reception open to the public. The event will include live music.

Milwaukee Innovaton will conclude on Monday morning June 11 with a keynote speech from Vijay Govindarajan.
