If you are unfamilar with the name Milwaukee native Drea Smith, hopefully in 2012 you will get to know her better. A graduate of Milwaukee's High School of The Arts, Drea Smith is a singer/songwriter that was in a duo by the name of He Say, She Say a few years ago. The group was signed to Lupe Fiasco's label, but unfortunately like most groups they broke up.
Then Drea, while living in Chicago, met OK Go's Tim Nordwind online via a friend. The online connection started as a friendship bonding over bands like The Cure and Joy Division. Then Nordwind began sending tracks with no vocals to Drea to write and sing over, and that was the initial beginings of what would be the new group now known as PYYRAMIDS. Drea later moved out to Los Angeles to continue the collaboration.
"Pyyramids comes as a reinvention for both players and steps into new, wild territory. For Nordwind, the guy with the bass, beard, and glasses in OK Go, Pyyramids’ expansive textures find him far from the bright indie pop and all-inclusive videos that have made OK Go one of the most recognizable—not to mention most-watched—acts of the digital age. (Though that doesn’t mean Pyyramids won’t try their hand at videos.) For Smith, formerly the saucy half of the electro-pop duo He Say She Say—and a stint with Lupe Fiasco—it brings her songwriting into a place of bold new maturity without sacrificing the force of her singular presence. For both, it is an unlikely partnership entirely befitting of the new age."
The duo recenlty released an EP entitled Human Beings, which features 5 tracks and a remix of the title track. The EP was release on OK Go's own label called Paracadute You can purchase the EP via the PYYRAMIDS' main website. Listen to EP below and let me know what you think.
