Listen: A teacher's life is immersed in kids. Early mornings, long days, evenings grading papers. So, what would make a teacher want to volunteer her free time working with... students?

Claudia Heller is a 4th grade teacher at Hayes Bilingual School in the Lincoln Village neighborhood who got involved with Milwaukee SCORES almost accidentally -- their after school writing sessions convene in her classroom. However, a devoted teacher like Claudia wouldn't let an opportunity like this pass, and used the opportunity to get more involved with her own students and other eager SCORES kids.

When I asked her what her favorite SCORES memory was, it didn't take her long to find an answer. This is her answer, the story of her summer trip with the SCORES team to Appleton for the Badger State Games:

BONUS! A little slice of audio production process for you! I originally produced this piece on a train, where I didn't have access to the internet. Since this piece was about a bus trip to Appleton this summer and I wasn't present for the trip to gather audio, I thought I'd spice it up with some outside sound effects -- these can go a long way in creating a feeling of environment and presence. I have a few sources for sound effects (actually, all of the ambient sound and sound effects thus far in the Make A Difference campaign have been recorded live on site), but a nice resource when I'm on the road is the website, freesound.org. So, I did a few simple searches ("school bus," "bus," etc.) and almost immediately found what I was looking for. I threw those in, along with some audio I gathered at the SCORES soccer practice, and the product is the above piece. Below, you can hear what the piece sounds like without any sound effects. As a listener, does it make a difference to you?
