To be honest, I was getting sick of all the those silly top city lists. For example, Milwaukee is one of the top beer cities (duh). Well, I'm very to tell you about this list thanks to Mary Louise Schumacher. A few months ago, I wrote about the Bloomberg Mayors Challenge, and Milwaukee should compete. Well, not only Milwaukee competed in the challenge, the city is one of the top 20 finalists. What does that mean? It means that Milwaukee will be competing for a chance to pick up between $1 and $5 million dollars for Milwaukee's idea. Milwaukee compteted against hundreds of other cities. Here is the Milwaukee idea:
Milwaukee will "develop HOME GR/OWN, a bold, revolutionary idea that empowers residents and community organizations to transform foreclosed properties into community assets that improve public health and nutritional outcomes, revitalize neighborhoods, and spark economic opportunity. The City owns nearly 4,000 vacant lots and foreclosed homes and will designate a significant portion of them for other creative uses including urban agriculture and urban homesteading."
The next step is that the finalists will participate in an 'idea camp', which is a 2 day collaborative session in New York. The session's purpose is to strengthen and strech their ideas. (via Art City)
