April 13 2008
This year's festival season is packed with great music and art. Summerfest, Coachella, Pitchfork Music Festival, Lollapalooza, and The Roots Picnic are some of the most anticipated festivals of 2008. However, there is one festival you should keep your eye one and check out. It is the Black Lily Film & Music Festival held in Philadelphia May 1st to 4th. It returns for a second year. What is the Black Lily Film & Music Festival?
Black Lily, Inc. (a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization) is committed to supporting women artists of all ages, especially musicians and filmmakers, both emerging and established, by highlighting their work and providing opportunities for networking and training. Black Lily, Inc. values women’s voices and seeks to educate the general public about the importance of women’s art. We value politically conscious art and underground art, and we are dedicated to education, diversity and collaboration through art, culture and entertainment.
Last year had performances by Amy Winehouse (before she was big), Amanda Diva, Alice Russell, and my friend Sarah White and her band at the time Black Blondie. Check out this year's schedule.
On the music side, this year there is one jam-packed concert on Saturday May 3 featuring Bahamadia, Ladybug Mecca, Jaguar Wright, Amanda Diva and many more! The Black Lily Honors will be incorporated into the concert. This year’s honorees are: Bahamadia, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Jeri Lynne Johnson, Martha Diaz, Pearl Bowser, Stephanie Black, and Tia Lessin. There is also a hip-hop night featuring all female DJs and emcees on Thursday May 1 with a performance by Invincible. Both concerts take place at World Café Live. Check out the trailer below.
