Self-proclaimed, "hip-hop blues" artist G. Love returns with his latest fusion of political messages and sophisticated song structures on Fixin' To Die. The album is still full of G Love's signature blend of blues, alt-rock, soul and hip-hop, but this time there's something more. The Avett Brothers have had a deep influence on G. Love this past year, and the result is a foray into folk music.
The band was originally formed in 1992 in Philadelphia when G. Love recruited Jimmy "Jazz" Prescott on acoustic bass and Jeffrey Clemens a.k.a. "House Man" on drums in order to help flesh out his compositions in a band setting. The self-titled debut, released in 1994, won them near-instant acclaim and adoration thanks to its blues-based song structures and hip-hop beats.
More than 15 years later, Fixin' To Die is quite the departure, but remains true to G. Love's eclectic style. (link)
