The end a week here on Sound Travels, and agin the tone was very democratic as some very awesome listeners took part in the poll to pick the topic here on Friday's show. This time, Algerian Rai went head to head with Ghana Funk and Old-School Cumbia. Cumbia won.
What I played today leaned heavily on a couple of compilations recently released on Soundway Records that are superb. Compiled by WIll Holland a.k.a. Quantic, The Original Sound Of Cumbia is the perfect tutorial for anyone looking to learn more about this seminal Latin style of music. Nevermind that many of these recordings were made before your Grandmother was even a mother, this is timeless stuff and I was happy to share these cuts with y'all...
Hermanos Tuiran "Lluvia"
Los Alegres Del Valle "Samaria"
Pedro Salcedo y su Orquesta "La Vaca y el Caporal"
Santander Flores "Capital Cebuista"
Jaime Simanca y sus Fandanguueros "Cumbia Negra"
Los Corraleros De Majugual "La Burrita De Eliseo"
