The Historic Mitchell Street Preservation Corporation plans to buy and restore a former hotel from Palermo Villa Inc. that is currently used as a warehouse. The White Eagle on TH and West Maple Street was self-proclaimed in the 1940's as the city's only Polish Hotel. The exterior will be restored to it's original state, but with more windows. The original floors and bar will be rehabbed and the three story building will eventually house a restaurant and banquet hall.
The nth Annual Milwaukee River Challenge, featuring collegiate and club rowers from across the nation, returns this Saturday from am to pm. Teams will begin the three mile course at nth and Canal streets on the Menomonee River, heading east to the Milwaukee River junction ending up at Schultz Park just below Pleasant Street.
Almost 30,000 Chicago teachers and support staff went on strike this morning after union and school officials were unable to reach a contract agreement after 10 months of negotiations. This is Chicago's first teacher strike in 25 years.
