A fire in the sewer system downtown created an explosion near the intersection of Mason and Jefferson around 5:30 last night. WE Energies is working to recover power to over 500 in the area. A 15-foot area of pavement around a manhole cover crumbled, but no injuries were reported. WE Energies think a faulty electrical cable may have started the fire.

The Vatican announced Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28th, due to his "advanced age". Benedict, age 83, became the 265th pope in 2005. The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415.

Unlike last year when Adele won 6 Grammy's, this year's awards were more evenly spread out. The Black Keys won  Best Album and Dan Auerbach won Producer of the Year. Mumford & Sons took home two Grammys, including Album of the Year for "Babel". FUN. was named Best New Artist and won Song of the Year for "We Are Young". The 80-plus categories are voted on by members of the Recording Academy, which is made up of creative and industry professionals.

A historic and unused tunnel beneath Bay View, stretching from Lake Michigan at E. Russell Ave to the Kinnickinnic River at Chase Ave, might be given new duty as an addition to the deep tunnel wastewater storage system. The 105-year-old Bay View tunnel's original job: pouring lake water in the river at S. Chase Ave to flush away sewage and industrial waste in the early years before Milwaukee's sewage treatment plant. Engineers say it would be worthwhile to take advantage of the old brick-lined cavern's 6 million gallons worth of storage capacity.
