Milwaukee's Department of Public Works named the engineering and planning team of HNTB and HDR to provide final design services for the streetcar project. HDR brings to the table experience as the final designer for systems in Salt Lake City, Dallas and Kansas City. Rep. Dale Kooyenga announced this week he was drafting state legislation intended to kill the streetcar project.
North Korea's leader announced a plan to prepare standby rockets to hit U.S. targets after American stealth bombers carried out a practice mission over South Korea. The rockets are aimed at military bases in the Pacific and South Korea. CNN reports there is little to no chance that N. Korea has the technology to successfully land a missile in Guam, Hawaii or anywhere else outside the Korean Peninsula.
Construction and mining equipment company Caterpillar has announced they will be laying off employees at various locations, including a facility in South Milwaukee. They haven't released specific numbers that will be affected by the layoffs but it's estimated that 40% of the workforce at the South Milwaukee location will lose their jobs.
In music news, Michelle Shocked made anit-gay slurs at a San Francisco club earlier this month, which prompted club owners to cancel her upcoming shows. This week, she staged a sit in outside a Santa Cruz nightclub on the night that she was due to perform there. She sat with tape across her mouth that said "Silenced By Fear" in a white disposable safety suit as she encouraged people to pick up a Sharpie marker and write on her.
