The 137th Annual Westminster Kennel Club dog show wrapped up yesterday as "Banana Joe", an Affenpinscher, took home the top title, Best in Show. Three dogs with Wisconsin ties have taken top honors. "Cheese" a long-haired dachshund from St. Francis, Finish Lapphund "Yutori's Shades of Autumn" from Brown Deer and "Ri Lee", Tibetan terrier from Oconto Falls all won Best in Breed. 2,721 entries in 187 breeds and varieties competed in this year's contest.
In local music news, Celebrated Workingman's front man Mark Waldoch announced yesterday that their show this Saturday night will be their last. Waldoch expressed gratitude to the bands supporters saying "Thanks from the top of my lungs to the bottom of my gluttonously romantic heart" and announced a special guest musician for the show, Scott Schoenbeck of The Promise Ring and Dashboard Confessional fame. They are opening for Retrobution Gospel Choir at Cactus Club this Saturday at 10pm.
After a shootout and standoff in the forest of Big Bear Lake on Tuesday afternoon, Christopher Dorner, the former L.A. police officer sought in the region's largest manhunt, was apparently killed in a cabin as it burned down around him. Officials say they have believe he was inside the cabin as it caught fire and will use forensic science over the next few weeks to confirm the identity of the remains.
The Milwaukee Board of School Directors approved a plan to transform Bay View High School, focusing on creativity and innovation. They plan to build a strong science/technology/engineering/arts/math (STEAM) program. The school will also phase out its existing middle-school grades, beginning by admitting no 6th-grade students in the upcoming school year. Bay View will also accept a smaller 9th-grade class for 2013-14 school year.
