Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected the 266th pope, taking the name Pope Francis and becoming the first Latin American pope. Francis is a fierce critic of socially progressive trends, including gay marriage. In recent decades, he has emerged as a champion of social justice and a voice for the poor.

The Milwaukee County Zoo picked names for the jaguar cubs. B'alam, the Mayan word for jaguar meaning "great and wonderful king", was chosen from over 1,300 entries in a public contest. Students in Belize, where Pat, the father of the cubs is from, chose the name Zean, the last few words in "Belizean." The Belizean schoolchildren co-authored a book with Milwaukee-area students called "Pat the Great Cat, A Jaguar's Journey", telling the life story of the cubs' father.

Local housing and service programs that support the homeless in WI have been awarded more than $21 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The money will help 92 local homeless-assistance projects in the state, with half of the money going toward efforts in Milwaukee. Local projects compete to receive the grants, which go to support everything from street outreach and assessment to transitional and permanent housing. The money also helps fund job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child-care.

Republican state Senator Glenn Grothman plans to reintroduce legislation, allowing the sale of unpasteurized milk in Wisconsin. Supporters insist raw milk is healthier and tastes better, opponents claim it can contain pathogens that can sicken people and has done so hundreds of times in recent years. The Legislature approved limited sales in 2010, but then Gov. Jim Doyle vetoed the plan. Grothman will reintroduce his plan in the upcoming weeks.
