All month on the 7 o'clock Sample, we have been exploring the music of James Brown.  The most sampled man in popular music.  James Brown's raw and groove based music style laid the foundation for Hip Hop music.

In the early 1970s, James reformed his band to create a new fresh and funky sound. Brown and Bobby Byrd employed a new band that included future funk greats, such as bassist Bootsy Collins, Collins' guitarist brother Phelps "Catfish" Collins and trombonist and musical director Fred Wesley. This new backing band was dubbed "The J.B.'s", and the band made its debut on Brown's 1970 single "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine".  In 1974, James released his classic double LP "Hell"  This funk classic had such hits as "Cold Blooded", "Please, Please, Please" and this jam...

"MY THANG"

That is a funky number!

Many Hip Hop acts over the years have sampled this song.  Jazzy Jeff, LL Cool J, J Dilla, and in 1993 Marley Marl took this horn line to create a hit single for the freshman album by the Lords Of The Underground " Here Come The Lords".

I present to you... FUNKY CHILD.
