Listen: The Neighborhood House of Milwaukee has long had a commitment to anti-childhood obesity and healthy lifestyles programming — they have a wonderful environmental education program and keep their kids moving all day. And as part of that commitment, they have their kids grow and eat their own foods. Issues of food access and nutritional choices are well-known in Milwaukee, and their approach is one that gets kids’ hands dirty, as well as keeping their mouths happy.
As you step out the back door of the Neighborhood House and turn the corner, there’s an explosion of green — a garden, planted and tended by the Neighborhood House youth, that’s overflowing with growth. Listen, as I get an introduction to their beautiful garden:
