Summerfest is billed as the “world’s biggest music festival” the fest is allowed that title by stretching an incredible amount of bands over eleven days. When you are planning who to see over the eleven days, sometimes the pure volume of bands can be overwhelming. The headliners can be pretty easy to figure out, but what band are you going to see when you get there early to get your fill of fried eggplant and people watching? That is where we are coming in. As your alternative to the alternative radio stations in Milwaukee, you can rely on us to give you the low down on all those hip band that are playing before your favorite headliner. This is the top 5 NON-HEADLINERS that we are raising our $12 beers to this year.
5. Fever Marlene Wednesday, July 3rd 8:00 at the Harley Davidson Roadhouse
If have listened to 88Nine with ANY frequency this summer you are sure to have heard Fever Marlene’s song Easy Eyes, as it has entered into heavy rotation here. Fever Marlene is the kind of band we love here, they make great music, and they are from Milwaukee. What more do you want?
4. Cheap Time Sunday, June 30th 8:00 at the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse
This band is for all you lo-fi, burnt out skuzzoids out there. Cheap Time is the kind of band that I would sneak a cheap bottle of whiskey passed security for. Get ready for pit pushing and garage rocking. I will see you in the front row.
3. LEAGUES Wednesday, July 3rd 5:30 at the U.S. Cellular Connection Stage
We like this band so much that we are doing a special performance with them at the Discovery World Museum before they play at Summerfest. Better news, YOU CAN GO. Check this link here if you want in.
2. Rhymesayers currated set Friday, June 28th all day at the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse
Okay, I am cheating a bit here, but I couldn’t pick just one. Summerfest is chronically lacking in sick hip-hop shows every year. This year they are making it up to us by letting Rhymesayers, the Minneapolis hip-hop label have the Harley Davidson Stage all day on the 28th. We are pumped to see The Uncluded, a very positive collaboration between Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson. As if that wasn’t enough, Brother Ali is playing at 8:00. Thank you Based God.
1. PHOX Friday June 28th 4:15 at the U.S. Cellular Connection
See this band before they get really big on the hip scene in the next year or two. PHOX is a brilliant band making the most beautiful, intricate, and unique music at the Fest this year. Fronted by the gorgeous Monica Martin, this Wisconsin band is proud of their roots, and we are just so happy to share a state together. These guys and gal are really something.
This list was really hard to put together! Here is a list of NON-HEADLINER honorable mentions that are just as worthy of your attention this sumerfest. Boy Blue, Bronze Radio Return, Capital Cities, De La Buena, Elusive Paralellograms, Ethan Keller, Frankie Flowers, Herman Astro, Hey Marseilles, Hugh Bob & the Hustle, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, Klassik, Matt Pond, Mike Magione & the Union, Paul Cebar, Semi-Twang, and Vic & Gab.
