Two of Irish music’s preeminent performers, soulful vocalist Karan Casey and guitar virtuoso John Doyle, will feature songs from their album Exiles Return during a concert brimming with stunning vocals and powerful instrumentals at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, 2133 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Pre-concert music in Quinlan’s Pub will be provided from 6:30-7:15 p.m. by Milwaukee based band The Rogue 6.
Each an ICHC favorite and founding member of the supergroup Solas, which was known for rousing tunes and striking renditions of traditional songs, the former band mates reunited to create a stripped-down CD that showcases the power of songs about immigration, loss and yearning.
Since beginning a solo career, Casey has released five critically acclaimed albums and won numerous awards including Best Irish Female Vocalist twice. She has performed with a who’s who of other Irish and folk artists including Peggy Seeger, the late Liam Clancy, James Taylor and Tim O’Brien, and received a Grammy Award for her collaboration with saxophonist Paul Winter. USA Today called her work “shiver-inducingly excellent.”
Doyle is considered one of the most influential musicians in Irish music. His rhythmic guitar chops and effortless harmonies make him in demand as a musical partner and he was described as a “dream guitarist” by Irish Edition. In 2010, Doyle and fiddler Liz Carroll’s album Double Play was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is also a noted composer and arranger recording and performing with numerous other artists including 2008-10 tours with Joan Baez.
