War is brewing. Denmark, resting on its past military might, has fallen behind in the arms race and unknowingly stands at a precipice, embroiled in an internal battle for the integrity of the Danish state. Catherine Friesen’s Hamlet struggles against the usurping Claudius (Mark Corkins), sexual prejudice, and martial law to revenge the murder of his father. Set against the backdrop of Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, this production promises a new hearing of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy and a new view on the role of the Danish Prince.
We are excited to present our first full length production! And we would not be true to our mission without a slight twist to this classic tragedy. Though we are not the first company to ever have a woman portray the contemplative Dane, we may be one of the first to incorporate transgender identity into the play. Though our production is not a vehicle for a particular political or social agenda, we believe that Hamlet as a female who identifies as a man provides a spark to hear this play with fresh ears, taking nothing for granted and allowing our audience to relive the wonder of suspense. We believe that you will see the struggles of the Danish Prince in a new light.
