In honor of True Skool’s ten year anniversary, dynamic hip-hop group, EMC performed in the 88NINE Studio Friday afternoon. True Skool is an urban after school program designed to engage youth in an outlet of artistic expression. The program highlights interactive education through hip-hop, drawing, breakdance and more, allowing kids to strengthen their skill sets and grow in a healthy environment. EMC played a three song set, spoke about the group formation and told stories of their artistic journeys. The studio space was full of True Skool members and it was powerful to see this hip-hop group entertain, encourage and motivate this audience of young people to continue with their creativity.
The members of EMC motivated by example; as they humbly spoke of their success and performed songs from their new EP, The Turning Point, it was clear they wanted to say something positive with their music. They were enthusiastic about working hard and finding a way to embrace inner creativity, going hand in hand with the mission of True Skool. This program highlights the significance of art and gives kids a new way to express emotions and creatively tell their own stories. The presence of True Skool is changing and shaping lives through the power of art.
The celebration of True Skool in its tenth anniversary continues Saturday, July 19 at The Wherehouse. For more information on the celebration and on the organization check out http://www.trueskool.org/.
