Gov Walker signed Wisconsin's $68 billion state budget for 2013-15 into law yesterday, but not before including 57 vetoes. Walker used his veto power to deny a provision that would have provided $3.5 million of the next two years to communities statewide to demolish foreclosed homes, most of them in Milwaukee. He also vetoed a provision allowing bail bondsmen to operate in WI for the first time since 1979 and vetoed a bill that called for the WI Center for Investigative Journalism to vacate UW-Madison's campus, stating that decision should be left to UW's Board Of Regents.

The Milwaukee Public Library is seeking artists' submissions for their new east side branch, set to be completed in fall of 2014. The library is accepting submissions until July 15th for artwork attuned to the history and culture of the business district on North Avenue that surround the East Library while taking into account the modern feel of the space.

A fast-moving Arizona wildfire got out of control on Sunday in a forest northwest of Phoenix, overtaking and killing 19 members of an elite fire crew in the deadliest wildfire involving firefighters in the U.S. for at least 30 years. The fire started after a lightning strike on Friday and spread to at least 2,000 acres on Sunday, destroying 200 homes.

The grassroots group Neighbors First New Berlin filed a suit against the City of New Berlin and Walmart to halt a proposed 24-7 superstore to be located at the corner of Moreland Road and Greenfield Avenue. The 16-acre parcel sought by Walmart is wooded with three-quarters of an acre of wetlands and includes a bike trail. The land also borders the cemetery, Highlands Memorial Park.
