As reported by WUWM, the Wisconsin DNR warns this year's spring thaw could produce hazardous conditions on some WI waterways. If warmer temps mix with strong rain, the combination could crack loose large slabs of ice that could jam into each other as they move down rivers, forming dams. Watershed scientists are monitoring state and local rivers. More online here.
"Gravity" was the big winner at last nights' 86th Academy Awards, taking home seven Oscars, including best Director. "12 Years a Slave" was named best picture and Mequon native John Ridley won for best adapted screenplay, "Dallas Buyers Club" won three awards, including two in acting categories for Matthew McConaughey and Jered Leto. Cate Blanchett won best actress for her portrayal of Blanch DuBois in Blue Jasmine. "Let it Go" from the animated film "Frozen" won best song.

WI Gov. Scott Walker joined with the Menominee Indian Tribe of WI to request a 180-day extension to the deadline for making a decision on the proposed Menominee Hard Rock Casino at the former Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha. The additional time would be used to obtain a thorough, independent economic analysis on how the project would affect the two other tribes that run casinos in Wisconsin. The regular deadline for decision is August 23rd.
