Pope Francis on Monday removed two American-born cardinals, including former La Crosse Bishop Raymond Burke, from the Vatican Congregation for Bishops. They were among more than a dozen ultraconservative members of the Vatican old guard who were removed from the 18-member congregation on Monday.

Wisconsin could see a dramatic rise in the number of charter schools operating outside of districts and without teachers unions, under a new Assembly bill drafted by Republicans. The proposed legislation would eliminate district-staffed charters and empower University of Wisconsin System institutions, state educational service agencies and technical college district boards to staff the schools.
