Through it's Miracle on Canal Street program, Potawatomi Bingo Casino donated over $1 million to numerous local children's charities, the second highest amount the program has raised in a single year. The 20 Miracle on Canal Street charities each received $35,813. Since its inception in 1994, the program has made 552 donations totaling more than $13.6 million.
Milwaukee County residents will receive free general admission to the Milwaukee Public Museum on the first Thursday of every month in 2014 through MPM's new "Thank You Thursday" program beginning Jan 2nd. MPM has extended hours on Thursdays and will be open from 9am to 8pm. Mondays, which had been free, will become regular admission days at MPM, with Milwaukee County residents receiving a discount.
Northwestern Mutual Foundation is donating $2 million to build a special area inside Children's Hospital of Wisconsin for children who receive outpatient treatment of cancer and blood disorders. The new area will include exam, treatment and conference rooms and a community room where patients and their families can engage in play and educational activities led by trained staff. The hospital does about 10,000 treatments a year and has outgrown its space.
The fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name Milwaukee will be christened in Marinette today. The 380-foot combat vessel will be a part of a fleet of new warships capable of operating in shallow costal waters. USS Milwaukee is the third ship of its kind built in Marinette, with five more contracted over the next few years.
