Ald. Michael Murphy was selected as Milwaukee Common Council president, replacing Willie Hines who left this month. Murphy, a senior member of the council serving since 1989, was approved by unanimous vote on Tuesday. Murphy is active in city programs supporting affordable housing, sustainability and development.
Fund Milwaukee, a grass-roots investment network providing an alternative to traditional business financing, has hit a milestone, more than a million dollars invested in small local firms. In the last two years, the community-minded group has grown to 80 members, who meet regularly to hear from and get to know entrepreneurs seeking money, then decide individually whether to invest. The Department of Public Works has received a ton of requests to fix potholes - 997 since the start of the year, over 300 more than this time last year. State aid for local infrastructure in Milwaukee has fallen more than 10% over the past three years, Mayor Barrett along with other mayors from Milwaukee County, are urging the state to divert $43 million toward fixing local roads rather than high-profile highway projects. In Music news....attention country music fans, Another headliner has been announced for 2014 Summerfest. Country music superstar Brad Paisley will headline the Marcus Amphitheater this year. Paisley will be joined by special guests Darius Rucker and Joel Crause on Friday June 27th.
