As reported by the MBJ, the long-anticipated reconstruction of North 27th Street between St Paul Avenue and West Highland begins today and will last into December. The project will add new harp lamps, sidewalks and "decorative" crosswalks in addition to rebuilding the driving lanes. The reconstruction hopes to make the area more pedestrian friendly, attracting more businesses.
Mayor Tom Barrett is calling for 100 new police officers in his 2014 budget proposal unveiled Tuesday. He is hoping to have 50 officers graduate in January 2014 and be on the streets by summer of 2014, focusing on locations and individuals with the most crime.
Al Jazeera America, the first all news cable network since Fox News Channel debuted in 1996, began broadcasting Tuesday. Shortly before is debut, AT&T U-verse announced it would not carry the channel because of a contract dispute. It is also not carried by Time Warner Cable, but will be available by DirecTV and DISH.
The Harmony Initiative Foundation has obtained an option to buy the former Laacke & Joys building on North Water Street as a potential downtown site for the partnership between UWM's Peck School of the Arts, Milwaukee Ballet and The Medical College of WI. The partners have been seeking a site downtown Milwaukee for studio, clinic, rehearsal, peformance and office space that all three organizations would share.
