The $83 million transformation of half of the state's largest public housing project, located on 75 acres on the northwest side of the city, features 250 townhouses, single-family units and multifamily apartments surrounded by flowers and plants. Internal streets create a neighborhood feel, there's a playground and a 3/4 acre community garden planted in cooperation with Growing Power.
Over 30,000 California prisoners continue to refuse meals today in what might become the biggest hunger strike in California prison history. 2,300 prisoners also refused to go to work or to their classes. The striking prisoners wish to improve conditions for those locked in solitary confinement without windows, access to fresh air or sunlight. Consider this, the United Nations condemns the use of solitary confinement for more than 15 days as torture.
A former Medical College of WI employee who had been charged with economic espionage in April pleaded guilty Wednesday to a lesser offense as a plea deal with federal prosecutors. Hua Jun Zhao was charged with stealing a cancer research compound and secret research data. He had applied for a grant in China claiming the research he was bringing with him was his own.
All-day parking at General Mitchell International Airport will cost a little more next year under a proposal approved by a Milwaukee County committee Wednesday. The Transportation Committee approved a resolution to increase daily parking costs by 50 cents, helping to make up lost revenue at the airport. The proposed increase would bring in about $2.6 million in 2014.
