The Salvation Army announced their Red Kettle Christmas Campaign raised nearly $3.6 million over the holidays, exceeding its 2013 goal by nearly $100,000. The money raised will finance services throughout the year ensuring critical needs of the unemployed, underemployed and homeless in Wisconsin.
Milwaukee Public Schools' have received new funding from the NEA Foundation and AT&T which will allow its Urban Schools Aquaponics initiative to expand into five new schools, reaching 1,500 MPS students over the next two years. The contribution will help increase low-income students' interest in STEM education. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Aquaponics is a highly efficient and sustainable form of farming in which water from aquatic animals is used to feed hydroponically grown plants.
The State Fair is currently on the lookout for unique posters to compete in its first Wisconsin Fairtastic Poster Competition. Interested WI artists 18 or older need to submit a first draft sketch of their poster along with a portfolio of previous work. Artists with top four submissions will be granted a $400 stipend to complete the second draft of their design. Then on June 11, the winner poster will be announced, with the winning artist receiving an addition $1000 cash prize. Info found on line at radiomilwaukee.org.
President Obama is traveling to Wisconsin today and plans on speaking about job training and education at the GE Energy plant in Waukesha. While here, he will sign an order authorizing a government-wide review of federal job training programs. He will then travel on to Tennessee to discuss education plans at McGavock High School in Nashville.
