Two Milwaukee area homeless shelters are able to open up extra beds this week thanks to a donation from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The Guest House for men and Cathedral Center, which serves families and women, will be able to accommodate the increasing need for shelter as temperatures drop close to zero. All 52 passengers from a ship stuck in Antarctic ice have now been transferred by helicopter to an Australian icebreaker. The research team aboard the Russian ship, which got stuck on Christmas Eve in unusually thick ice, were on an expedition to gauge the effects of climate change on the region. All passengers appear to be safe, healthy and in good spirits.
All flights in and out of Mitchell Airport were temporarily halted for a few hours after a plane got stuck on the taxiway yesterday. The Delta flight from Minneapolis landed safely around 4:30pm, but the breaks overheated, blocking the only open runway. Airport maintenance crews had to clear the snow off the second runway and flights began running again a few hours later.
As reported by MBJ: Wisconsin will receive $13.9 million from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for meeting targets to enroll children in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program. The state is sharing in $307 million in performance bonuses awarded to a total of 23 states.
