I think we should first begin this section by saying RIP to Pete Seeger (1919-2014). At almost 100 years of life, he had surely lived through a bunch of different events, and he made songs reflecting that. In addition to being a prolific songwriter, he was known also for his political preferences. His “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” reflects such ideals and was listed as one of the “Top 20 Political Songs” by New Statesman in 2010. Seeger wrote the first three verses himself in 1955, and in 1960, Joe Hickerson added verses and turned it into a circular song.

In fact, the song was so powerful that it inspired a group like Earth, Wind & Fire to remake it in their own way. That way has more funk, adding more instrumentation and blasting out some more soul—some may call it screaming. Either way, you can’t appreciate the new without knowledge of the original.
