414 Music Live Review: Heidi Spencer and the Rare Birds

This past Thursday, 414 Music Live featured talented local vocalist Heidi Spencer and her band, the Rare Birds. The band, whose new album Things I Remember Golden dropped on Friday, brought a style of folk music to the Radio Milwaukee studio that was uniquely…Milwaukean. Humble and raw, their sound on record sounds as if it could have been cut in a country cabin. For their live set at 88Nine, I was in awe listening to Spencer’s rich bluegrassy voice carry the band’s unhurriedly swaying ballads. Songs like “Two Saloon Ghosts” featured imaginative yet reflective songwriting that showcased Spencer’s attention to detail in her lyrics. Of her songwriting for the new release, Spencer stated, “some of the songs were old lyrics that I brought back to life.” This notion of bringing out the best of the past and enhancing it for the present embodies the essence of Heidi Spencer and the Rare Birds’ work as musicians. Their music is classic folk for the modern listener, and it was a true pleasure to see their songs come alive onstage. Thank you to all who came out to show support!
